More Movies

Well, I saw two more movies this past week(end). First, Pirates of the Caribbean on Friday. Callie has a very good review of this movie on her blog, so I won't go into much detail. Suffice to say that this was one of the best movies of the summer thus far. It was a LOT of fun. Johnny Depp is hilarious, and Orlando Bloom continues to kick butt, even when he's not Legolas. The sets, costumes, skeletons, everything was very stylish and cool, and the sword-fighting, while not LOTR, was very entertaining. I highly recommend this movie.

The second movie was Finding Nemo. It took me a while to see this, but it was well worth the wait. I have always enjoyed the Pixar movies, and this was no exception. It was beautiful to watch (the f/x were amazing), as I have always been fascinated by the depths of the oceans. It also had a good bit of humor for both children and adults (I laughed quite a bit), and it had a good message about parent/child relationships. Finally, the father (after a rough beginning) is the hero, and someone to be looked up to and loved by his kids. This is not a common theme for Disney movies, so I was pleasantly surprised to see it here. Again, nothing spectacular or anything (no Oscars here), but good clean fun for the whole family.

Johnny Depp is one of the most under-rated and unrecognized actors around. I think he's great - all except that "Ninth Gates" business. Ick.

But what about 28 Days?? We've just got so much great undead action to choose from this summer!

Mark my words: Nemo will indeed win an Oscar, for Best Animated Feature. And I think it'll deserve it.

ok, fine. for best animated feature. but no "real" oscars.

Why isn't that a real oscar? Is the statue hollow or something? Does the academy not really vote on who wins? What's not real about it?

Now, what needs to be realized, is the Oscar's as a whole is a crappy awards show. They don't give the best films, hardly ever, the best picture Oscar, most don't even get nominated.

What the Oscar's are good for is showing where the tenor and tone of everday Hollywood (the best boys, key grips, old irrelevant actors who once got a nomination) currently rests. This year they liked musicals, so a musical won, and so on and so on, its not much of an "awards" program, other than being narcissistic...

correct, the oscars are a joke these days. in fact, one of my first ever blogs was about that very thing.

the reason it is not a "real" oscar is because the world real is in quotation marks. that means that by real, i just mean the category is bogus, and shouldn't be there. i think animated films are fun, but don't need to be voted on as a category, and given their own separate oscar. if they are going to do that, they might as well be the golden globes, and give an oscar for best "comedy", etc etc.
