Ok Courtney, etc., here's your chance. Bart and I had a discussion the other night about family terminology. Here it is, let's see if you can resolve it. Bart is obviously Lisa's brother-in-law. No one is disputing that. However, my contention is that Bart is also now COURTNEY'S brother-in-law. Bart argues that there is a different word for that, as they both merely married Rockett girls (as I hope to do one day). Is that the case, or would they just be brothers-in-law? Any input would be helpful.
Posted by at August 29, 2003 11:53 AMI rightly think of my brother's wife as a sister-in-law, but I would also consider her brother a brother-in-law. What other term would you use?
Posted by: John at August 29, 2003 12:09 PMthat's part of my question...the other part is what would your wife call your brother's wife? sister-in-law? i think so, but bart heard differently...or so he claims:)
Posted by: Uncle Josh at August 29, 2003 12:38 PMI've always considered Toby my brother-in-law.
Posted by: Deacon Blues at August 29, 2003 01:11 PMI consider my sister-in-laws husband, Aaron, to be my brother-in-law. I mean, you do have to draw the line somewhere, I wouldn't say that Christin (his sister) and I are necessarily related. Though, if I ever need to borrow some money from a bank, I may try see if she'll go for it! :)
Posted by: Shannon at August 29, 2003 01:40 PMthis is all fine and dandy, but y'all are in agreement with me. the question is, does anyone out there know if there's another word for the relationships we are talking about, or is it as I have always suspected: troy/bart is insane?
Posted by: Uncle Josh at August 29, 2003 01:58 PMOh okay. Here's a site that answers relationship terms. Purty nifty, especially for genealogist. My genealogy software program has a relationship calculator on it- and it tells you if so and so is your 3rd cousin, whatever. It says "no direct relation" in this situation.
Posted by: Shannon at August 29, 2003 02:52 PMBy the way, that means Bart is wrong and if you placed bets on it, it's time to pay up!!
Posted by: Shannon at August 29, 2003 02:55 PMNo wait. That means Josh is wrong. Oh forget it! This is like trying to figure out Daylight Savings Time- I suck at that, too.
Posted by: Shannon at August 29, 2003 02:56 PMNo, I've got it now, really. Bart is incorrect. Courtney CAN be considered Bart's "brother-in-law" - no other term for it. Okay, NO MORE POSTING FROM ME. Sorry.
Posted by: Shannon at August 29, 2003 02:59 PMNow we know the rest of the story. Thanks Guys. Josh you are right and you will some day be my brother-in-law. damn! not really :)
Posted by: svenska at August 29, 2003 05:48 PMI just wanted to echo Shannon's thoughts: I've always thought af here as my sister-in-law. I realize that does not settle the debate. On the one hand, Shannon and I have a special relationship because of the people that each of us married. On the other hand, the quality and distinction of that relationship would remain the same whether we called it brother/sister-in-law or another name entirely. Since I don't know another word for thatrelationship though, I'm just going to stick with sister-in-law.
Posted by: the booth at August 30, 2003 12:15 AMOk, I'm an idiot but I don't know how to do this blog thing so I'm responding in the wrong place but it's the only way I know how so oh well. Anyways, meltdown...Sarah Nass is my friend and she told me about your blog and since we spent some time together last year I wanted to say hey! Remember good times with Jason? Yep yep. I've know LAcy Rockett for forever, I dunno if she remembers me but I've def known Matt W. for forever too and it's quite weird to hear about you being in the "Monroe crowd!" :) Congrats on your engagement, maybe I should talk to Lacy and fill her in on some stories. ;) Like, uhh...Brett, watermelon and beer cans, with Jason at the wheel? Ok anyways, sorry for the long message in the wrong place!!! Ttys :)

Posted by: UJ at September 1, 2003 09:15 PMI have a question, my brother and sister are having a debate on the use of the phrase "reverse racsim". She said that it is an incorrect phrase and that racsim is racsim, but my brother says different. Is this a correct phrase?
