Ok, so I've been doing my best to avoid liking the band Death Cab for Cutie. First of all, the name sucks. Second, I always thought their songs were really boring, and from what I heard, they all sounded the same. Of course, a lot of times when I do things like this (avoid a band puposefully with no real good reason), I end up loving them. Good examples would be Dave Matthews Band and Smashing Pumpkins, who I hated in High School (cause everyone else loved them) and now are a couple of my favorites. Anyway, they always seemed too "indie" to me, like they were trying to be artsy and pretentious just for the sake of it. And that irritated me. I was kind of like Summer in the O.C.: "it sounds like a guy, one guitar and a WHOLE lot of complaining". And to some degree that's true. But I broke down and bought their album Plans for Lacey's birthday because we both love that song Soul Meets Body. And after a couple listens, I gotta say, I'm really changing my tune. What an album! It's beautifully written, with great lyrics and haunting, gorgeous melodies. Lacey and I love it, and suffice it to say, I'm now a fan. And the guys seem pretty cool and down to earth, too, which is a plus. Do yourself a favor and check 'em out.
