Calling All Word-Smiths

Ok Courtney, etc., here's your chance. Bart and I had a discussion the other night about family terminology. Here it is, let's see if you can resolve it. Bart is obviously Lisa's brother-in-law. No one is disputing that. However, my contention is that Bart is also now COURTNEY'S brother-in-law. Bart argues that there is a different word for that, as they both merely married Rockett girls (as I hope to do one day). Is that the case, or would they just be brothers-in-law? Any input would be helpful.

Deep Thought For The Day

I guess more bad things have been done in the name of progress than any other. I myself have been guilty of this. When I was a teenager, I stole a car and drove it out into the desert and set it on fire. When the police showed up, I just shrugged and said, "Hey, progress." Boy, did I have a lot to learn.

First Day of School

Remember the first day of school? The excitement, the anticipation, the boredom? Well, I got to relive that to some degree today. It was my first day of teaching, and it was very exciting, and went very well. I had a ball. My classroom was all spic and span, the posters were on the wall, and my speech was prepared. And they took it very well. It's going to be a great year. God has blessed me with some wonderful kids, and has put me in a wonderful place. So pray for me, that I am able to teach these kids in a manner that they enjoy and learn from, and that glorifies God.

Deep Thought For The Day

Sometimes life seems like a dream, especially when I look down and see that I forgot to put on my pants.

It's My Birthday, And I'll Cry If I Want To

Well, it's my 26th birthday today...I'm gettin' old. Anyways, instead of today being a joyous occasion, it has confirmed what I've long suspected: my birthday falls at the worst time of year EVER. Not only do I have to miss out on mid-year birthdays in school and all that fun stuff, but it usually falls that the first day OF school is my birthday! Today, for instance, I have teacher in-service all day long, and as a kicker, Lacey has to work tonight. Ugh. Perhaps things will look up this evening, you never know.

At Last

Well dear friends, I am pleased to announce that I am finally courting. I know, it took me 25 years to find a girl that I love, and that loves me, but who's counting? So without further ado, I am proud to say that I am now courting Miss Lacey Rockett of Monroe, Louisiana. Please pray for us.

Adaptation

Ok, I finally got around to seeing this movie. It is the second feature film from Spike Jonze, of Being John Malkovich (a wonderfully weird movie) fame. And I have to say, despite a little "mature material", this is a very good movie. It tells the story of real-life screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (who wrote Being John Malkovich) struggling to adapt Susan Orleans' book, "The Orchid Thief" into a movie. In the process, he (Nic Cage) interacts with his fictional twin brother (Nic Cage---fictional to you and I, very much real in the movie), the author of the book (Meryl Streep), and the main character of the book (Chris Cooper, who won an Oscar for the role), amongst other wonderful cameos. Confused yet? Wait till you watch the movie. There are layers upon layers. But it is well-acted, well-written, beautifully shot, and suprisingly touching. I thought that it deserved more accolades, especially amongst the fluff released last year. But, Hollywood is made up of a bunch of wimps, so go figure. Chicago better than this movie? Not even close.

Deep Thought For The Day

Love can sweep you off your feet and carry you along in a way you've never known before. But the ride always ends, and you end up feeling lonely and bitter. Wait. It's not love I'm describing. I'm thinking of a monorail.

TGIF Deep Thought

The land that had nourished him and had borne him fruit now turned against him and called him a fruit. Man, I hate land like that.

Deep Thought For The Day

Whenever I hear the sparrow chirping, watch the woodpecker chirp, catch a chirping trout, or listen to the sad howl of the chirp rat, I think: Oh boy! I'm going insane again.

New and Improved?

Has anyone seen "The New Tom Green Show"? I watched some of it last night, and while it was funny in parts, I was not impressed. I got tired and annoyed at the old ones pretty fast, but I have to admit they were hilarious. What a jerk he is. But this new show...it's pretty vanilla. It's like Green is trying to be all respectable. He wears a suit, and acts like he's Leno or Letterman. I'm bored just talking about it. So what's the deal? Is he actually trying to compete with those guys? Any insight would be most helpful. Oh, and I will add that one part did make Jordan and I laugh hysterically. Green has a guy playing piano for his transitions, you know, like Paul Shaffer (sp?), but this guy is about 85 years old and is literally hooked up to an IV...

Deep Thought For The Day

If they have moving sidewalks in the future, when you get on them, I think you should have to assume sort of a walking shape so as not to frighten the dogs.

He was the kind of man who was not ashamed to show affection. I guess that's what I hated about him.

Listening Post

What I've been spinning:

Ben Folds --- Live: Just burned this. Thanks Christin! Great CD. He sounds like a wonderful performer, and I'd love to see him.

Boyd Tinsley --- True Reflections: Pretty good. Not great. I expect more from Dave's solo effort.

Pearl Jam --- Live from Mansfield, Mass: Awesome. Forty seven songs on three discs. One of them is "unplugged" (acoustic) and is absolutely fantastic. They do everything from old classics like Jeremy, to obscure covers like Footsteps.

Jack Johnson --- On and On: I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the more I listen to this CD, the more I love it.

Coldplay --- A Rush Of Blood To The Head: One word, three syllaybles. Beautiful.

Frank Sinatra --- The Very Good Years: One of my favorite CD's.

Deep Thought For The Weekend

I think my new thing will be to try to be a real happy guy. I'll just walk around being real happy until some jerk says something stupid to me.
