I haven't seen many new movies lately, so not much to report. A few of us saw Runaway jury about a week ago. It was pretty good, I must say. They did completely change Grisham's novel, but that's pretty standard these days. If you can get past the whole "guns are bad" propaganda, the performances by Hackman, Cusack, and Hoffman are excellent. And there is some style in the direction. It was very enjoyable to watch and listen to, and was just kind of a fun movie. I like those from time to time.
I also bought the Indiana Jones Trilogy on DVD last week. I can't wait to watch the special features. Lacey and I watched Raiders of the Lost Ark last week, and I was reminded of how much I love that movie. This trilogy, like Star Wars and Back to the Future, holds so many memories of when I was a kid. I must have seen Raiders 75 times...and I still love watching it. Anyway, the new digital mastering of the picture and sound are fabulous. And I'm sure the documentaries, interviews, etc. will be a lot of fun. Boy, isn't it nice to hearken back to a time when Harrison Ford still did great movies?
Well, the season premiere of 24 was last night, and of course Lacey and I were watching with baited breath. I have to say, I enjoyed it, it was pretty good...but I was a tad disappointed. Perhaps my expectations of the show have risen so high that it can never match up. I accept that. However, they seem to be going a little overboard. I won't spoil it for any of you, so let's just say that Kiefer needs a break. Can't he still save the world while being in a powerful position (i.e. director of FBI or something), rather than being relegated to doing everyone's (and I mean EVERYone's) dirty work? It seems as though the writers are doing everything in their power to make Jack go through as much as is humanly possible...and then more. That said, I like the storyline, and a lot of the side plots. I still think it is going to be a great season. These are just small gripes. It's still the best show on TV, bar none.
I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.
I know, I know. I review too many movies, and too much music. I am a bad, bad person. You may now mock me on your blog.
Lacey and I saw School of Rock last week. Jack Black is hilarious (what a shock), but not in a drop-dead, Zoolander meets Tommy Boy sort of way. In a decent movie sort of way. It was definitely a bit cheesy sometimes, but the kids rocked (they actually PLAY those instruments) and it was a very well-done flick. What else would you expect from Linklater (Dazed and Confused)? Anyways, they let Black go a little more than Shallow Hal and a little less than Hi Fidelity...the result was one funny movie, and some good entertainment.
And then there was Kill Bill on Friday night. I wasn't going to review this on my blog, but recent events on other blogs have made me want to, if only to mention TARANTINO the infidel. I'm telling you, the movie was stunning. The first half hour took some getting used to, but then it settled down into one heck of an action/kung-fu flick. And of course there were the cool little Quentin oddities, jokes and references to look forward to, that made it dang funny. Certainly some of the nods and jokes from old, cryptic movies were over my head, but I very much enjoyed the movie, as did everyone in our rather large group. The fight scenes were amazing. The sets beautiful. The cinematography, score, soundtrack, acting...all brilliant. This movie packs a wallop. It's worth it...but be prepared for some violence. Just a warning.
If you go flying back through time and you see somebody else flying forward into the future, it's probably best to avoid eye contact.
Well, the Indianapolis Colts pulled off the greatest comeback in the history of the NFL on Monday, and man was it glorious to watch. Having been kicked all over the field for a half, the Colts came out in the second half and scored 35 points (28 in the fourth quarter) on probably the best defense in the NFL (and possibly the best defense ever). And all of that AT Tampa Bay! Now I know most of you don't really like the NFL, or football for that matter, but you have to admit, coming back from a 21 point deficit in the final 3:44 of the game is pretty impressive. My boy Manning made it happen by passing for over 300 yards in the second half, much of it to the best wide receiver in the game, Marvin Harrison. If you ever get a chance to watch those two, and the Colts play, take it. WHEW! It was one heck of a game.
Instead of having "answers" on a math test, they should just call them "impressions," and if you got a different "impression," so what, can't we all be brothers?
If you lived in the Dark Ages and you were a catapult operator, I bet the most common question people would ask is, "Can't you make it shoot farther?" "No, I'm sorry. That's as far as it shoots."
