Deep Thoughts

Once while walking through the mall a guy came up to me and said "Hey, hows it going?". So I grabbed his arm and twisted it up behind his head and said "Now whose asking the questions?"

Baby Update

Lacey went in for another appointment and ultrasound today, and I'm happy to report that mother and child are doing great! The baby now measures 44 mm from crown to rump (about the size of a small plum), and we have adjusted the due date to June 20th. This means that Lacey is starting her 12th week today. She has been feeling much better (although she had a bad day Monday), so we think the morning sickness might be subsiding. The baby looks healthy, the heartbeat is strong, so continue to pray for a healthy, uneventful pregnancy and delivery!

Thanksgiving Update

Wow, I guess it's been a while. I haven't had the heart for blogging lately, and I've been pretty busy with my two jobs and driving around everywhere for the holiday. But it's been fun. Here is a quick update about what Lacey and I have been up to since the holiday, now that it's been a week.

Last Wednesday: After school and windows, Lacey and I go to the airport to pick up Vickie. She had an uneventful flight, and we were pretty exhausted when we got home, so we pretty much went straight to bed.

Thursday (Thanksgiving): Slept in a bit, then headed over to Mom and Dad's. After a quick breakfast, we sat around visiting, listening to a playlist I cooked up on the DellPod, and taking turns holding Jocelyn. She's getting so big! Joel, Damien, Dad and I also used the beautiful weather we've been having as an excuse to go outside and throw the football around. After breaking a sweat, we came in and turned on the National Dog Show (which is starting to turn into something of a tradition) before dinner. We finally sat down with all 18 at the table, around 3:30. Dinner was fantastic, I won't even go into all the details. After that, we sat around reading Scripture and sharing what we're thankful for. Dessert followed, along with more visiting around, and finally everyone left. Went home and crashed into a tryptophan-induced coma.

Friday: Had to wake up early to get to the stores. I dropped Lacey and Vickie off at Kohls, and headed to Best Buy. I found some incredible deals there, Target, and at Circuit City on movies and whatnot for Joel and I, and made a couple of other quick stops before picking up the girls. The lines (for me at least) weren't bad at all! I did get lucky at Best Buy finding anything at all, but that's a long story. Anyway, after a quick Wendy's pit stop, we headed downtown to Circle Center mall. This was just a stopover for Joel and I, as we quickly joined Damien and went to the RCA Dome to stand in line for good seats to the Class 1A state championship football game between Sheridan (my high school alma mater) and Ritter. It was a fantastic game, with Sheridan prevailing in overtime 34-28. My uncle also got the family and others a luxury suite, and there was great food and great times had by all. We spent a bit of time up there after the game, and then headed home, where we watched The Family Man (a holiday classic, which Vickie had never seen) and went to bed.

Saturday: I did windows in the morning while the girls shopped some more. The afternoon was very lazy, Joel and I watched some TV, and finally Mom and Dad, Jess and Damien and his parents came over for a fondue party, but mostly to watch the ND/USC debacle. Ysh. Don't even talk to me about it. It was a fun, albeit uneventful day.

Sunday: Church, lunch, euchre, took Vickie to the airport. It was supposed to be relaxing and slow. But on the way to the airport, my Uncle called Joel and asked he and I if we wanted his tickets to the Colts game that night! So we rushed home, changed, headed BACK downtown, and ended up at the Colts/Eagles game, where the Colts summarily stampeded Philly 45-21. It was a lot of fun, but I paid for it with lack of sleep. A great weekend capper, none the less. Then it was back to work Monday, and that brings us pretty much up to date. Lacey has another appt. with the doctor today, so another update is most likely imminent on the baby. Stay tuned!

Michigan/Ohio State

Everywhere you look, it's the talk of the town. Michigan plays Ohio State Saturday, the first time the two have met with so much on the line. The winner moves on to the National Championship game, and the loser might make it too! It's #1 vs. #2, and the game should be incredible. But all this talk about it being the greatest rivalry in sports, or even in college football is a load of crap. I haven't done all my homework, so forgive the dearth of exact stats, but let's get going.

First of all, the greatest coach in the history of Michigan football, Bo Shembechler died today. It's a great loss. But the man never won a national championship! In fact, Michigan has only won ONE national championship since 1948...ONE!!! Ohio State has only one one since 1954...again, ONE!!!! This tells me that it's not often when there's this much on the line. On the other hand, teams like USC and Notre Dame, who also meet pretty much every year, constantly have this much on the line! Next Saturday will be yet another meeting between the two, with yet another BCS bowl berth on the line. And between the two, Notre Dame and USC have won OVER TWENTY (20) NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!! This stat speaks for itself...and isn't that how success is measured? Winning national championships? Anyway, ND and USC have probably the two most broad fanbases across the country, and it's just a way better rivalry, year in and year out. So forget all the hype of 1 v 2. Tune in NEXT week for the game of the year. There's a lot more I could say, but my blog audience doesn't care about football, and I have to teach.

Classic Movie Quotes

"It's AnchorMAN, not AnchorLADY, and that is a scientific fact."

Holy crap, I could put a million of these on here.

Notes

1.Yeah, so Ben Folds put out his old EP's as an LP in October. I knew it was coming out eventually...how did I miss the release? I'm sure it's really good, looks like I'm gonna have to fork over some cash today. It's just sad that I haven't bought it already! I'm slipping, I really am.

2.The movies on my must-see list just keep piling up. Still haven't seen Flags of Our Fathers. Both Babel and Stranger than Fiction come out today. And I'm still DYING to see Borat. Both Joel and Gibbs say it's hilarious, and it's getting crazy press, almost all of which praise it. But the real question is, could Stranger than Fiction be a sleeper for Movie of the Year? I just read Roger Ebert's review of it, and besides stating the obvious (Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson and Dusting Hoffman give great performances), he mentioned that it is really a critique of art itself and what we owe to it, and what it owes us. In many ways it seems very similar to the movie Adaptation, but I really think the movie might be clever and funny enough to be fantastically brilliant. I haven't seen it yet, but I think it might be pulling rank on the others. So even though he doesn't really read my blog, What'd you think, Josh Gibbs?

3.In the TV world, the fall finale of Lost was Wednesday night. I have been pretty disappointed with Lost, but only on nit-picking grounds. I just get frustrated when there is 3 minutes of show for every 4 minutes of commercials. It's ridiculous. And even though the pace has picked up over last season, it still seems as though not much happens in any given episode. I also thought the Sawyer/Kate subplot was dumb. I know, it sounds like I hate the show, but I really don't. Although they are TOTALLY ripping off 24's idea of making the viewers wait so that they can show back to back episodes until the season finale. 24 is just so ahead of its time on so many levels.

4.The O.C. is not long for this world, unfortunately. The season premiere supposedly got horrible ratings, and they went so far as to put back-to-back new episodes on this week (Wed/Thurs). It just isn't the same show without Marissa. It's dark, sometimes uninteresting, and just doesn't have the same vibe. I'm glad this is the last season. In my estimation, the show started going downhill (albeit gradually) in season 2, with the Sandy/Rebecca subplot and then the Kiersten/Rocketeer man debacle. Season 3 wasn't very good at all, and now, it's pretty much unsalvageable. I still love the show, but mostly the way I would still love a child who was misbehaving. I just can't spank the O.C. (man that sounded weird).

5.Finally, Stadium Arcadium (the Red Hot Chili Peppers) is still getting heavy rotation on my playlist. It's just SO.DAMN.GOOD. Nearly every song is fantastic. I can listen to it over and over. It's absolutely positively their best album, and probably the best one I've heard in the last 5 years. I got into discussion fairly recently about the Chili Peppers and I'm more convinced than ever that this is their best work, and Frusciante totally wails on this disc. Anyone that thinks the band was better with Navarro is insane. Hear me now and believe me later: buy this album. Or at least burn it.

The Heartbeat

Wow, I've been lazy. I guess I coulda posted this last week, when Lacey had her appointment, but I didn't. Anyway, we went in for an ultrasound, and the baby seems to be extremely healthy! We were able to see the heartbeat (not hear it though, because they didn't have a doppler), and it was incredible. I keep thinking about it, because it's amazing that it's heart is so vibrant! The baby is about the size of a pinto bean now, but we found out that Lacey is (as of today) 7 weeks, 4 days along, and our projected due date is June 22nd! Please continue to pray for the health of both Lacey and the baby. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
